Laughing Through the End of Term

alisoneyer

As we approach the end of this term, I can't help but reflect on the wild ride that is teaching IB Business. Between lesson plans, case studies, and endless discussions about marketing strategies, there have been moments that reminded me why I absolutely love what I do. Working with teenagers can be a difficult job, but they can also be downright hilarious! So back again after success earlier in the year are my funniest moments from the last half term.

The Vocabulary Virtuoso

One of my favorite moments came from a coworker who was correcting an English essay during a free period. A student took "improve your vocabulary" to heart in the most spectacular way. The opening sentence was a masterpiece of overambitious language: "The writer scrumptiously juxtaposes the two characters' personalities through their clandestine love affair." I mean, who uses "scrumptiously" and "clandestine" in the same paragraph? I give that student kudos for trying out what he has been learning, and also giving teachers in the staff room a good laugh before the holidays.

Rap Rhyme Struggles

Then there was the break time rap incident. Picture this: a student practicing his rap, getting more and more intense, until he drops the word "fornicate" and then... complete creative block. I overheard him saying, "What can I rhyme with fornicate? This is stumping me!"

Let's just say some impromptu rap challenges are best left unresolved. I'm still waiting to find out what he decided to rhyme it with, but I think I will have to wait until after the holidays.

The Favorite Class Dilemma

One of my classes has always been particularly close-knit and competitive about their status as ‘one of my favorite groups’ (I never tell a group they are my favorite when I am actually teaching them because I don’t want other groups to feel weird about it). Recently, a few of them walked by my classroom during a particularly engaging lesson with another group. They caught me laughing and deeply involved in a discussion, and immediately became convinced I was developing a new "favorite" class.

Later that day, a few of them approached me with these adorable, slightly worried expressions. "Miss," one of them said, "we noticed you seemed to be having way too much fun with the other class. Are we not your favorite anymore?" Their genuine concern was touching. They weren't just worried about being my favorite - they wanted to ensure our connection remained special.

As we head into the holidays, I hope you all take some time to laugh, reflect, and recharge. Business isn't just about exam practice, markschemes and internal assessments – it's about understanding people, embracing moments of happiness, and coming back refreshed to start the term with new energy.

Happy holidays, everyone! See you next term.
