As an IB Business teacher, you know that preparing students for the Paper 1 exam can be an intimidating task, especially the first time. I know, because I was just there in April with my students. The last case study, BON, introduced words and concepts that might have seemed critical at first glance. However, after reviewing the official Paper 1 exam and the suggested vocabulary, it became clear that spending extensive time on the pre-released vocabulary wasn't as necessary as I initially thought.
Instead for OWL, I think it’s better to focus on essential topics like interest rates and their impact on businesses, such as OWL who is investing in a theme park, will be more beneficial. But what else would I do? How would I prepare my students if they were taking the November exam series?
The Power of Case Studies
I’m a huge fan of using case studies for exam prep. They help students apply what they've learned to OWL Paper 1. Here’s how you can incorporate case studies into your teaching:
Analyze in Class
Start by going through a case study together in class. This lets you guide students, highlight key points, and discuss possible exam questions. It’s a great way to show them how to tackle similar problems on their own.
Practice Under Exam Conditions
Set up a timed practice exam with another case study. This helps students get used to the pressure of the real thing and manage their time effectively. It’s a confidence booster!
Independent Study
Assign the third case study for homework. Let your students work through it at their own pace. This flexibility allows them to focus on areas where they need the most practice.
