As I'm nearing the end of teaching Unit 1 in my IB Business class, I can feel the excitement building. Not just from me, but from my students too. Why? Because one of my favorite times of the year is coming up - our Unit 1 Podcast Project.
How the IB Business Podcast Project Works
Don't get me wrong, I love a good review game (you can check out my favorite here). But there's something special about watching students take all that knowledge they've been absorbing and turn it into something real and tangible. Here's how it works: students create their own 5-10 minute podcast about a topic from Unit 1. It sounds simple, but it's amazing to see how they transform from teenagers into confident "business experts" as they work on their projects.
Real Impact of This IB Business Project
What I love most is how this project combines classroom concepts with real-world skills. Sure, they're reviewing important business ideas from Unit 1, but they're also learning how to research effectively, write engaging scripts, and even do some basic audio editing. Talk about useful skills for the future!
And you know what? The students love it too. Just the other day, my Year 2 diploma students were talking about the podcast project as one of their favorite activities of the first year. That's when you know you've hit on something good. But it gets even better. A few years back, I had a student who really loved the idea of this project. Fast forward to today, and he's started his own business podcast. He told me he still uses skills he learned from our class project. How cool is that?
Addressing IB Learner Profile Attributes
Of course, it's not all smooth sailing. There are always a few groans when I first announce the project (usually from the shy kids who hate public speaking). But by the end, even the quietest students are proudly sharing their podcasts. As teachers, we're always trying to tick those IB Learner Profile boxes, right? Communicators, check. Thinkers, double-check. Reflective, yes again. This project hits them all, and in a way that feels natural, not forced.
So, as we wrap up Unit 1 and I start handing out the podcast project guidelines, I can't help but smile. I know I'm about to see some amazing growth, creativity, and authentic revision. And isn't that why we all got into teaching in the first place? If you want to try out the podcast project in your own classroom, you can find all the materials below. But even if you don't use my resources, I encourage you to find ways to let your students apply their knowledge creatively. The results might surprise you!
